Cabra Bicentenary (1819 - 2019)

1 January 2019 | General Interest

In December 2019 the Convent and School of the Dominican Sisters at Cabra, Dublin, will celebrate its bicentenary. On 12th December 1819 the sisters arrived at Cabra and the school was established in the same year.

Cabra’s bicentenary has worldwide significance. Dominican foundations from Cabra include not only a number of other convents in Ireland, but congregations of Dominican sisters in Australia, South Africa and New Orleans USA. Sisters from Cabra also established communities in Bom Sucesso, Lisbon (founded in 1639), and in Argentina (since 1968).

The school has always had a strong musical tradition and one part of the celebrations is an invitation to musicians/composers to create new works to mark the bicentenary. The Music Department of Cabra School (St Dominic’s College) would like members of the Dominican family to disseminate information about this so that it will reach as many interested composers as possible.

A concert of carols will be performed in the convent chapel on our Foundation Day, 12th December 2019, two hundred years to the day since the Dominican sisters came to live in Cabra. The winning songs will be sung as part of this concert. The school looks forward to receiving entries from the Dominican Family worldwide.
